The Truth About Success (It's Not Just Winning)

· · ·
Jason Fried podcast episode

About the Guest

Jason Fried is the co-founder of 37signals (Basecamp, HEY) and the author of books like Rework and It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy at Work. He's known for building calm, profitable software businesses with small teams, strong taste, and a deep respect for independence.

A while back, I hosted Jason Fried on my podcast.

He's not trying to "win the market." He's trying to build something that lasts.

That mindset is rare. And it's especially useful for founders who feel pressure to grow at all costs.

Here are a few things worth stealing.

· · ·

1. "I don't think of winning."

Jason said something simple, but it changes the whole frame:

He doesn't think in terms of winning or losing.

He thinks in terms of: Can we cover our costs? Can we make a profit? Can we thrive in our corner of the ecosystem?

This is the opposite of the VC-internet mindset where everything is a battle for domination.

You can build a great business without conquering the world.

· · ·

2. Don't build "minimally viable." Build the best version you can.

He doesn't like the phrase MVP.

Not because he wants to build big. Because he wants to build right.

His point is: Build the best version you can within constraints. Cut what you don't need. Keep it tight. Keep it real.

"Viable" as a goal feels like aiming low. "Best you can" feels like aiming honest.

· · ·

3. Timeboxes beat infinite ambition.

Jason shared a simple practice from Shape Up:

No single feature should take more than 6 weeks. Sometimes it's 3 weeks. Sometimes 2.

The goal is to stop projects from ballooning forever.

Shorter timeframe → smaller scope → faster shipping → more learning.

Most teams don't have a speed problem. They have a scope problem.

· · ·

4. Independence is an underrated advantage.

His accelerator take was refreshing:

He thinks the money early can even be harmful unless you truly need it.

Because money comes with a clock. And a timeline. And less autonomy.

Independence gives you something else: the ability to build for 20 years, not 20 months.

This doesn't mean "never raise money." It just means: understand what you give up when you do.

· · ·

5. The simplest focus system: kill notifications.

Jason's approach to focus is not fancy:

No notifications. No badges. No constant pull into the device.

He checks things when he has time. If it's urgent, people can call.

And he adds something most people miss: Don't expect instant replies from others either.

Respect other people's attention, and they'll respect yours.

· · ·

My takeaway for founders

You don't need to "win."

You need to build something sustainable: small team, tight product, clear scope, real customers, healthy margins, enough independence to stay in the game.
