The meeting tax

I asked 20 founders to track how they spend their time for one week.

Every single one was shocked.

The average was 23 hours of meetings.

Twenty-three.

That leaves 17 hours for actual work.

In a startup.

Where everything needs to be built yesterday.

I call this the meeting tax. Nobody celebrates it. Nobody even notices it. But it quietly kills your momentum.

A simple meeting audit

Try this for one week:

1) Cancel all recurring meetings. See what actually breaks. (Most things won't.)
2) Require an agenda 24 hours before. No agenda, no meeting.
3) Default to 15 minutes, not 30. If you can't explain it in 15, you probably shouldn't meet.
4) Replace status meetings with async updates. Write it down. Share it. Let people read when they're ready.

Your calendar is a mirror.

If it's full of meetings, your priority is meetings, not building.

And startups don't win by meeting. They win by shipping.
