The one source nobody else would touch

· · ·
Juliette Humer and Tommy Kronmark, co-founders of Muse Bio

Every week I meet founders from every timezone. Most blur together by Friday. After 26 years, I have learned which ones stay with me. Not the ones with the best slides. The ones who are living the problem they are trying to solve.

This spring I met Juliette Humer. She stayed with me. So I have to be honest upfront. I am biased about this one. Let me tell you why, plainly.

She is building a stem cell company on a source nobody else would touch: menstrual blood.

Why she started it

She did not start it to chase a market. She started it because she was the patient.

  • At 23, she was told she had a degenerative spine condition.
  • The only therapy that could rebuild the tissue was stem cells.
  • It was too expensive and too hard to get. So she could not have it.

She built the company she needed. That kind of founder-market fit, you cannot fake.

The problem

Stem cell medicine works. But it stays out of reach. The cells are hard to get.

  • Today they come from bone marrow or fat, with a needle.
  • They age fast.
  • They scar when they heal.

So supply is scarce, invasive, and expensive. That is why the medicine never reached someone like Juliette.

Their answer

They looked at the one source everyone ignored. Menstrual blood.

  • It renews every month, on its own. No needle, no procedure.
  • The cells heal without scarring, which is rare.
  • The body was already throwing it away.

Why it matters more than skin deep

We treated infertility as an embryo problem. Often it is not. The problem is the lining of the uterus, too thin or scarred to hold a pregnancy. There is no real fix today. The same cells point straight at it.

That is a hard, physical, human problem. Not a feature. Not a wrapper.

The founders

  • Juliette built the labs, the bank, and the collection sites from nothing.
  • Her co-founder Tommy came from medical devices, the kind that must pass a regulator and survive real patients.

If you want to hear them tell it themselves, here is their pitch video.

Why I leaned in

I am wrong often. But years ago, at a Startup Istanbul pitch competition, the founder who won did not have the best slides. He had solved the pain he pitched. I backed him. I have watched that pattern repeat for two decades.

A founder solving her own impossible problem is rare. When I meet one, on a frontier everyone walked past, I lean in. I admit the bias. I think it is the right kind.

Building something hard and physical? I read everything.
