Is it normal to talk to yourself?
· · ·
I used to think talking to yourself was weird, maybe even unhealthy. Around here, people don’t usually look at it kindly. If someone talks to themselves, they’re quickly treated like they’ve “lost it” a little. So I always kept my distance from that idea.
Then this week I read something that said the exact opposite, and honestly, it was a relief.
What surprised me most was not just that self-talk is normal, but that it can actually help. The way we speak to ourselves matters. Using that inner voice to motivate yourself, calm yourself, or push yourself forward is not strange at all. It is human. But there is also a warning here: if you use that same voice to attack yourself, blame yourself, or feed your fears, it turns toxic very quickly.
So yes, being a little Pollyanna is not a bad thing. Just don’t let yourself get trapped in a spiral of negative thoughts.
